An estimated 12.8 million Americans,
aged twelve and older, use illegal drugs on a regular basis. This number reflects a decline of nearly fifty percent from the 1979 high of twenty-five million. This decrease represents a dramatic change in behavior. However, despite the extraordinary drop, more than one-third of all Americans twelve and older have tried an illicit drug. Ninety percent of those who have used illegal drugs used marijuana or hashish. Approximately one third used cocaine or took a prescription type drug for non-medical use. About one fifth have used LSD. Approximately sixty million Americans who used illicit drugs during youth, no longer use them, and in fact, reject illegal drugs as adults.
